The 2294 Hackamore is a bitless bridle that applies pressure to the horse’s nose and optionally slightly to the poll via lever-action shanks. The softly padded noseband can be adjusted via the bridle hooks, and the overall size is adaptable via the chin strap.

Description

2294 Hackamore

A Hackamore is a bitless bridle that exerts pressure on the horse’s nose and poll through lever action via the shanks. The noseband is softly padded and can be adjusted tighter or looser using the bridle hooks. The size of the Hackamore can also be adjusted via the chin strap.

Bitless and other bridles should always correspond to the training level of both horse and rider. We recommend bitless bridles only to riders who have mastered an independent seat, separate from the reins. Legally, bitless bridles carry a liability risk as the ability to influence the horse is less compared to a bridle with a bit.

Advantages at a Glance

Effect

  • Pressure on the horse’s nose, with slight leverage on the poll depending on the adjustment

For Which Horse is This Bridle Particularly Suitable?

  • Well-trained horses ridden by riders who have an independent seat

Note on Proper Use

Every bridle can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Feel free to contact us with questions about size and adjustment, or read here for more information on choosing the right size and proper adjustment in the horse’s mouth.

Size Guide

A hackamore does not sit inside the horse’s mouth, so you don’t measure the mouth width as you would for a bit. Instead, sizing is based on the shape of the horse’s head and the width of the nasal bridge.
To determine the correct size, measure the circumference of the nose where the hackamore will sit — approximately two fingers below the cheekbone, on the firm bony part of the nose (not on the soft cartilage). Use a flexible measuring tape and place it loosely around that area, replicating how the padded noseband would sit — close enough for stability, but not tight. A correctly fitted hackamore stays stable without sliding, while still allowing two fingers of space under the noseband. If you are between two sizes, it is usually safer to choose the larger one, as most models offer sufficient adjustability at the noseband.

Usage

Every bridle (with or without bit) can cause pain if used too harshly or is incorrectly sized.
This hackamore is bitless, meaning the influence is applied through the nose and poll rather than the teeth or bars. Because of this different contact mechanism, it should only be used by riders with refined aids and an independent seat. It is recommended for well-trained horses familiar with subtle communication, not for novices or unbroken animals.

Care

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.
