The 2298 curb chain is designed for proper use with Weymouth bits, helping to stabilise the bit action by evenly distributing pressure across the horse’s chin and lower jaw. It acts as an important safety and balance element to prevent excessive leverage.

Size Guide

The curb chain should allow approximately two fingers of space between chain and jaw when the reins are not engaged. It must only come into contact during active rein use, not at rest. Always check that it is not too loose (risk of over-rotation) and not too tight (too much pressure too early). A leather or rubber guard may be added for extra cushioning if needed.

Usage

The curb chain engages only when stronger rein pressure is applied, limiting the rotation of the bit and preventing it from tipping too far. It supports precise but controlled rein aids and should only be used by experienced riders, as incorrect adjustment or excessive rein use may cause discomfort or resistance.

Care

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.
