The 2428 Soft-Roll Bit double broken features a gentle double-jointed mouthpiece with a freely rolling Sweet Copper center that encourages active chewing and relaxed acceptance of the bit. The loose rings allow natural mobility in the mouth, helping the horse to find a soft and neutral connection — ideal for sensitive horses and refining contact.

Description

2428 Soft Roll Snaffle Double Jointed

A double-jointed loose ring snaffle is a widely used and frequently employed bit in equestrian sports. The action of this bit is relatively mild, making it a common choice for a young horse's first bit. The loose ring snaffle has round rings at the ends of the mouthpiece, which can move freely through the mouthpiece. These rings provide some mobility and help distribute pressure evenly. The round rings allow the horse to move the bit independently in its mouth.

The double-jointed loose ring snaffle is considered a gentle bit, suitable for young or sensitive horses. The double-jointed mouthpiece with Sweet Copper Soft Roll evenly distributes pressure across the bars and tongue. The Soft Roll can help stimulate mouth activity in horses. The continuous rings allow the bit to find a neutral position in the horse's mouth. The stainless steel mouthpiece is completely odorless and tasteless, making it suitable for sensitive horses.

NOTE: If a horse tends to play a lot with the bit, a bit with fewer joints (single-jointed) is preferable. If the horse is calm in the mouth and more mouth activity is desired, a double-jointed bit might be better.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse's mouth.

Sizes:

  • Width: 12.5 / 13.5 / 14.5 cm
  • Ring Diameter: 70 mm
  • Thickness: 14 mm

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
The 2428 Soft-Roll is designed to encourage relaxation and chewing — especially helpful for horses that become tense, rigid, or inactive in the mouth. It should be ridden with steady, elastic hands, allowing the horse to gently play with the roller rather than forcing pressure.
