The 2477 Waterford Full Cheek Snaffle features a distinctive Waterford mouthpiece comprised of a series of interconnected links that provide multi-directional movement and distribute pressure evenly across the horse's tongue, bars and mouth corners. Its full cheek arms offer lateral guidance and help prevent bit rotation, making it especially suitable for horses that lean on the bit or block it.

Description

A Waterford bit is a distinctive bit consisting of a series of interconnected links. Contrary to popular belief, this bit's action is quite mild, as the individual links allow movement in all directions and distribute pressure very evenly over the horse's tongue, bars, and mouth corners. The constant mobility of the links ensures that no point in the horse's mouth remains under intense pressure for too long. This bit is particularly well-suited for horses that tend to lean on or block the bit. The continuous movement in the mouth can encourage the horse to be more responsive to the rider’s hand.

The cheekpieces of this bit provide lateral guidance and stability. The Waterford Cheekpiece Snaffle is used with lifting cheek pieces that pass through the bit rings and have a ring at the bottom. Lifting snaffles can be used with one or two reins. When the reins are taken up, pressure is increased on the poll, causing the bit to tilt in the mouth and be pulled upwards. This also increases the pressure on the horse’s tongue and bars. As the name suggests, a lifting snaffle helps to elevate the horse. This type of bit provides a high level of control and is suitable only for experienced riders!

The stainless steel mouthpiece is completely odorless and tasteless, making it suitable for sensitive horses. The SWEET copper center piece encourages chewing activity.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. It should always be used with care and understanding to ensure the horse's well-being. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse’s mouth.

Sizes:

  • Width: 11.5 / 12.5 / 13.5 / 14.5 cm
  • Ring Diameter: 65 mm
  • Thickness: 16 mm
Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
