The 2658 Soft-Roll D-Ring bit Double Broken features a soft-rolling link made of Sweet Copper, designed to stimulate chewing and saliva production. The D-ring cheekpieces provide lateral support and help keep the bit stable in the horse’s mouth, making it ideally suited for sensitive horses that benefit from enhanced mouth activity and controlled stability.

Description

The large D-Ring bit is characterized by its fixed ring. The sides are designed to lie about one centimeter closer to the corner of the horse's mouth compared to a water bit. The D-Ring prevents pinching of the mouth corners in the rings and offers stronger lateral guidance compared to an olive bit. The horse cannot push the bit upwards with its tongue, so the mouthpiece sits more steadily in the mouth and is slightly more stabilized laterally. Since the ring does not rotate, there is a minimal effect on the poll, although the large D-Ring also slightly reduces this effect.

The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly over the tongue and bars, with the Soft Roll made of Sweet Copper in the central piece stimulating mouthing activity. The small D-Ring provides light lateral stabilization and guidance, creating calmness and stability in the horse’s mouth. The Stainless Steel mouthpiece is completely odorless and tasteless, making it suitable for sensitive horses.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse's mouth.

Dimensions:

  • Width: 11.5 / 12.5 / 13.5 cm
  • Ring Diameter: 70 mm
  • Thickness: 16 mm
Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
This Soft-Roll D-Ring bit is designed for horses needing increased mouth activity and stabilization rather than high leverage. Use with soft, consistent hands, enabling the horse to engage the bit, chew the roll and relax rather than brace. Because the D-ring restricts upward movement and the soft roll encourages chewing, you should monitor that the horse remains comfortable and calm rather than resisting. Ideal for training or sensitive mouths.
