The 1306 Fine Line Flex Baby Pelham combines modern comfort innovation with the controlled influence of a lever bit. The mouthpiece is made from flexible, food-grade PU (FDA-approved, plasticizer-free and completely safe), offering a warmer, more natural feel in the horse’s mouth. A concealed metal core provides break resistance and long-term security. The straight, anatomically shaped mouthpiece lies evenly on tongue and bars, with slight tongue relief to reduce pressure. The shorter shanks of the Baby Pelham create direct leverage while acting simultaneously on the tongue, bars and poll. This results in a quicker response than a traditional Pelham and therefore requires educated, sensitive rein aids and correct curb chain adjustment.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Composition

Mouthpiece: plastic, stainless steel; Ring: stainless steel

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse. Designed for sensitive-mouthed or metal-intolerant horses that may still require refined leverage or clearer self-carriage support in certain riding situations. This bit must only be used by experienced riders with steady, controlled hands — as leverage influence can build quickly if used incorrectly.
