The 1309 Fine Line Flex Kimblewick combines innovative comfort materials with mild leverage control. The mouthpiece is made from flexible, food-grade PU (FDA-approved, plasticizer-free and completely safe), offering a naturally warmer feel in the horse’s mouth. A reinforced metal core provides internal stability and break resistance. The straight, anatomically shaped mouthpiece follows the horse’s natural oral structure and lies evenly on tongue and bars, with slight tongue relief to reduce pressure. The Kimblewick works similarly to a Pelham but with a milder effect. It is ridden with a single rein, and the leverage varies depending on which ring slot the rein is attached to — the lower the rein position, the stronger the influence on the poll and lower jaw. Often referred to as a “jumping curb,” the Kimblewick is used with a curb chain for controlled leverage.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Composition

Mouthpiece: plastic, stainless steel; Ring: stainless steel

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse. This bit is suitable for horses that become unsettled in the mouth or lift against the hand, as well as horses being gradually introduced to curb-style bits. It is not recommended for inexperienced riders, but can be an excellent choice for riders seeking a milder alternative to the Pelham while maintaining refined influence and stability.
