The 1311 Fine Line Flex Swales Baby Pelham combines advanced comfort technology with highly responsive control for stronger horses. The mouthpiece is made from flexible, food-grade PU (FDA-approved, plasticizer-free and completely safe), offering a warmer, more natural feel in the horse’s mouth. A reinforced metal core ensures maximum safety and break resistance. The anatomically straight mouthpiece lies evenly across the tongue and bars, with gentle tongue relief to reduce pressure. The Swales Baby Pelham is a shorter-shanked version of the Swales design — it does not act on the poll, but delivers a faster and more uplift-focused reaction through its shorter leverage path. The large floating ring allows freedom in the mouth, while the small lower ring provides a precise upward-lifting action. With two sets of reins, the rider can fine-tune the level of influence depending on the rein chosen.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse. Ideal for well-trained, sensitive or metal-intolerant horses that tend to lean heavily onto the hand or pull downwards. This bit must only be used by riders with an independent, balanced hand, as it offers direct influence without poll pressure and reacts quickly. It supports improved self-carriage while maintaining a soft, horse-friendly mouthpiece feel.
