The 2242 Pelham rubber covered single jointed features a rubber-coated stainless steel mouthpiece designed for horses that resist metal bits or require a warmer, softer feel in the mouth. With a single-jointed mouthpiece and Pelham shank action, this bit applies leverage to the bars, chin and poll while offering even pressure over the bars and gentle relief for the tongue.

Description

The Baby Pelham applies leverage to the bars, chin, and poll. When the rider tightens the reins, the upper branch moves forward, affecting the poll, while the lower branch tilts backward, applying pressure on the mouth and chin.

The single-jointed mouthpiece sits more quietly in the mouth compared to a double-jointed mouthpiece and distributes pressure over the bars of the horse's mouth, with the central joint reducing pressure on the tongue.

The rubber-coated mouthpiece can be helpful for horses that dislike metal in their mouths. The material is warmer than stainless steel and can stimulate saliva production.

A Pelham should always be used with caution and is not intended for horses that already show issues with basic training.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly, and caution is especially necessary with leverage bits. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse's mouth.

Sizes:

  • Width: 12.5 / 13.5 / 14.5 cm
  • Port Height: 5 cm
  • Thickness: 16 mm
Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
This Pelham model is a leverage bit and should be used by experienced riders only. With the rubber-covered mouthpiece and single joint, it offers a gentler mouth feel—but because of the shanks and leverage components, it still requires careful handling. Use it when the horse pulls, leans forward, or raises its head, and always ensure proper fit and rider hand softness.
