The 2243 Pelham Rubber-Covered Mullen Mouth (not flexible) features a curved mullen-style bar mouthpiece covered in rubber, designed for riders seeking leverage with a warmer, more comfortable mouth-feel for the horse. The leverage effect acts on the bars, chin, and poll, while the rubber coating improves mouth acceptance and salivation.

Description

2243 Baby Pelham with Curved, Non-Flexible Bar

The Baby Pelham applies leverage to the bars, chin, and poll. When the rider pulls on the reins, the upper branch moves forward and affects the poll, while the lower branch tilts backward and impacts the mouth and chin.

The mouthpiece of this Pelham follows the natural shape of the horse’s mouth and lies flat on the tongue and bars. When the rider takes up the reins, the pressure is evenly distributed over the tongue and bars.

The rubberized mouthpiece can help horses that do not like metal in their mouths. The material is warmer than stainless steel and can stimulate salivation.

A Pelham should always be used with caution and is not suitable for horses that already have issues with basic training.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly, especially with leverage bits. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse’s mouth.

Sizes:

  • Width: 11.5 / 12.5 / 13.5 cm
  • Port Height: 5 cm
  • Thickness: 16 mm
Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
This Pelham bit is designed for experienced riders who need a bit that offers leverage but with improved mouth comfort. Because it uses a non-flexible bar, the influence is more direct and the bit requires calm, consistent hands and correct fitting. Use it when the horse pulls strongly, elevates its head or loses front-end control — but monitor progress and switch to a milder bit when the problem is corrected.
