The 2246 Pelham SWEET COPPER single jointed features short shanks that apply leverage to the bars, chin chain, and poll. The mouthpiece is made with the “Sweet Copper” alloy (approx. 90% copper, nickel-free) which provides a pleasant taste and promotes chewing and acceptance in the horse’s mouth.

Description

2246 Baby Pelham Single JointedThe Baby Pelham applies leverage to the bars, chin, and poll. When the rider pulls on the reins, the upper branch moves forward and affects the poll, while the lower branch tilts backward and applies pressure on the mouth and chin. The single-jointed mouthpiece sits more quietly in the mouth compared to a double-jointed mouthpiece and distributes pressure over the bars of the horse's mouth, with the central joint reducing pressure on the tongue. The SWEET Copper mouthpiece has a slightly sweet taste and is particularly well accepted by horses, and it may also encourage chewing.A Pelham should always be used with caution and is not intended for horses that already show issues with basic training.Advantages at a GlanceEffectLeverage effect on the bars, chin, and pollEven pressure distribution over the bars with relief for the tongueMouthpieceBetter acceptance: The sweet-tasting copper is particularly well accepted by horses and may encourage chewing.90% copper, 7% iron and aluminum, nickel-free, and particularly robustWhich horses are particularly suited for this bit?Horses that pull strongly to the jumpHorses that elevate their headNote on Proper UseAny bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly, and caution is especially necessary with leverage bits. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
This Pelham is designed for riders who need controlled leverage without excessive length of shank, particularly for horses that pull, lean on the hand or tend to raise the head. Because of the leverage effect, it should be used with quiet, consistent hands and only by riders experienced in managing bit-leverage setups. Ensure correct fit and appropriate riding context.
