The 2257 Waterford D-Ring Bit MAX RELAX is composed of a series of linked segments that ensure fluid, all-directional motion, distributing pressure evenly across the tongue, bars, and mouth corners. Its continuous movement prevents any single point from experiencing sustained pressure. The small D-rings offer gentle lateral guidance and stability, while the stainless-steel mouthpiece is odorless and flavor-neutral. A Sweet Copper center link stimulates salivation and encourages chewing.

Description

2257 Waterford Small D-Ring Snaffle Max Relax

A Waterford bit is a unique bit composed of a series of interconnected links. Contrary to popular belief, the action of this bit is very mild, as the individual links allow movement in all directions and the pressure is distributed very evenly over the horse's tongue, bars, and mouth corners. The constant mobility of the links ensures that no point in the horse's mouth remains under strong pressure for too long. This bit is particularly well-suited for horses that tend to lean on or block the bit. The constant movement in the mouth can encourage the horse to be more attentive to the rider's hand.

The small D-rings on this bit provide slight lateral guidance and stability. The stainless steel mouthpiece is completely odorless and tasteless, making it suitable for sensitive horses. The sweet copper center piece encourages chewing activity.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. It should always be used with care and understanding to ensure the horse's well-being. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse's mouth.

Sizes:

  • Width: 11.5 / 12.5 / 13.5 / 14.5 cm
  • Ring Diameter: 65 mm
  • Thickness: 16 mm
Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
