The 2259 Anatomic D-Ring Bit double broken combines stability, comfort, and precise communication. Its double-jointed, anatomically curved mouthpiece follows the natural contours of the horse’s mouth, reducing tongue pressure and distributing contact evenly across the bars. Fixed D-rings prevent the bit from rotating or pinching and ensure consistent, gentle guidance. Made of high-quality stainless steel, it’s durable, taste-neutral, and ideal for sensitive horses.

Description

The large D-Ring bit is characterized by its fixed ring. The sides are designed to lie about one centimeter closer to the corner of the horse's mouth compared to a water bit. The D-Ring prevents pinching of the mouth corners in the rings and offers stronger lateral guidance compared to an olive bit. The horse cannot push the bit upwards with its tongue, so the mouthpiece sits more steadily in the mouth and is slightly more stabilized laterally. Since the ring does not rotate, there is a minimal effect on the poll, though the large D-Ring slightly reduces this effect.

The double-jointed mouthpiece with tongue relief follows the natural shape of the horse's mouth and features a flat central piece. This design distributes the pressure more over the bars and reduces pressure on the tongue. The D-Ring provides lateral stabilization and guidance, creating calmness and stability in the horse's mouth. The Stainless Steel mouthpiece is completely odorless and tasteless, making it suitable for sensitive horses.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse’s mouth.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse. This bit’s fixed D-rings offer stability and steady contact, making it especially useful for horses that need clearer lateral guidance or tend to play excessively with the bit. Because it transmits rein aids directly, it should be used with soft, even contact and correct alignment in the mouth to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
