The 2270 Full Cheek Snaffle Double Broken features stable cheek arms that provide pronounced lateral guidance and limit excessive movement. The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure gently and evenly over tongue and bars, enhancing subtle communication and improving acceptance.

Description

The full cheek snaffle is characterized, as the name suggests, by its stable side cheeks. These cheeks offer various advantages and have a specific effect on the horse. They apply lateral pressure to the horse's cheeks, which supports lateral guidance and limitation, making it especially useful for training young horses. Additionally, they provide the rider with more stable control and help maintain an even connection to the horse’s mouth.

Since the cheeks stabilize the bit, the pressure on the horse's mouth is distributed more evenly and gently. This promotes softer communication between rider and horse and can contribute to better acceptance of the bit by the horse and a more relaxed movement.

The pressure on the outside of the bit aids in bending and helps the horse understand the rider's aids. The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly over the tongue and bars. The cheeks provide clear lateral stabilization and guidance, ensuring a steady position of the bit in the horse’s mouth. The small bit rings result in a more direct action with this bit.

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please contact us if you have questions about size and fastening, or read more here  about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse’s mouth.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse. The full cheek design gives clear outside rein cues and helps the rider influence bend and direction, but because of the fixed cheek arms, care must be taken that the bit does not catch or rub the horse’s cheeks. Use this bit especially for horses in training or those needing extra guidance during lateral work. The double-jointed mouthpiece helps moderate pressure and encourages soft contact when used with steady hands.
