The 2278 Fulmer Bit double broken blends the guidance of a full cheek with the mobility of a loose-ring snaffle. Its continuous rings let the bit find a neutral resting position, while the full-cheek arms provide lateral support and help prevent twisting. The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly over tongue and bars, and the Sweet Copper central link enhances acceptance and encourages salivation.

Description

The Fulmer snaffle is similar in construction to the full cheek snaffle, but the bit rings are not attached to the cheeks; instead, they are continuous like in a loose-ring snaffle. As a result, the Fulmer snaffle functions like a loose-ring snaffle with enhanced lateral guidance from the cheeks, while the action of a full cheek snaffle is more similar to that of a olive head bit.

The cheeks of the Fulmer snaffle exert lateral pressure on the horse's cheeks. This supports lateral guidance and restriction of the horse, which is particularly helpful during the training of young horses. The slight pressure on the outside of the bit supports bending and helps the horse understand the rider's aids.

The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly over the tongue and bars. The cheeks provide lateral stabilization and guidance, ensuring a steady position of the bit in the horse’s mouth. The loose rings ensure that the bit always finds a neutral position in the horse's mouth.

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please contact us if you have questions about size and fastening, or read more here about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse’s mouth.

Dimensions:

  • Width: 12.5 / 13.5 cm
  • Ring Diameter: 16 cm
  • Thickness: 14 mm
Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
Because the Fulmer design combines full-cheek guidance with loose ring mobility, it gives you directional control without sacrificing freedom. Use it with soft and consistent rein aids. The full-cheek arms help encourage bend, but don’t rely on them for heavy leverage. Ensure proper fit, symmetry, and alignment to avoid rubs or pressure points.
