The 2293 2in1 Butterfly Snaffle double broken provides two possible effects in a single design: one side delivers a softer, rounded action, the other a more angular, precise effect. Its double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly over the tongue and bars, while the continuous rings allow the bit to settle neutrally in the horse’s mouth. The Sweet Copper center link encourages acceptance and salivation.

Description

2293 Butterfly bit 2 in 1 double broken

The 2in1 bits from Stübben SteelTEC offer two levels of action in one bit. This is made possible by two differently processed sides, a rounded side and a more angular side for more punctual pressure. The 2in1 bits therefore offer a flexible solution for different training requirements.

A simple sign helps to keep track: If a + can be seen on the outside left of the bit on the mounting side, the more effective side is fitted. If this sign is missing, the softer side is fitted.

The butterfly bit 2in1 offers 4 different attachment options that allow individual pressure distribution and different effects on the horse's neck and mouth. The double-broken mouthpiece distributes the pressure evenly over the tongue and bars.

Advantages at a glance

Buckling options and pressure distribution

  • Gentle action: If the round side of the bit is buckled towards the horse's tongue, the bit is used as a normal water snaffle. This setting is ideal for general daily use.
  • Selective action: If the more angular side of the bit is buckled towards the horse's tongue, a more targeted, selective action is achieved. This setting enables more precise communication with the horse and can be helpful in special training situations.

  • The butterfly: various attachment options for the reins to customise the pressure of the bit on the mouth and poll as required
  • 1st option: If the reins are attached in the centre ring, the bridle works in a similar way to a Baucher bit with the main effect on the mouth and only slight pressure on the poll.
  • 2nd option: If the reins are attached to the lower ring, the leverage effect is increased. The bit works in a similar way to a 3-ring snaffle.
  • Option 3: A stronger effect is achieved by using Pelham straps attached to the centre and lower rings.
  • 4th option: The butterfly snaffle can also be attached to the upper ring with a chin strap so that the bit acts on the tongue, throatlatch, poll and lower jaw.
  • ATTENTION: Lever bits should only be used by experienced riders.

Mouthpiece

  • Consisting of stainless steel and SWEET copper centrepiece
  • Stainless steel is robust, tasteless and odourless
  • Better acceptance: The sweet-tasting copper is particularly well accepted by horses and encourages them to buy.
  • 90% copper, 7% iron and aluminium, nickel-free and particularly robust

For which horses is this bit particularly suitable?

  • for horses that frequently pull upwards
  • for horses that become particularly strong before the jump
  • for horses that become partially uncontrolled

Instructions for proper use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly, and this is especially true for bits with leverage effects. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse. Please contact us with any questions about size and fastening, or read more about choosing the right size [here] and proper fitting.

Please make sure that you do not permanently use the stronger side of the 2in1 bit.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
Because this is a 2-in-1 butterfly (lever-capable) bit, its effect is determined by orientation and rein placement. Mounted with the rounded side toward the tongue, it behaves more softly — similar to a water snaffle. Mounted with the angular side toward the tongue, it produces a more targeted, sharper effect. Use of different rein rings allows varying leverage: e.g. center ring gives a mild Baucher-style effect; lower ring increases leverage; Pelham straps or upper ring with chinstrap add further control over tongue, poll, and lower jaw.
Only experienced riders should use higher leverage settings; avoid leaving the more aggressive side permanently mounted to prevent desensitization.
