The 2490 Weymouth Bit Fine Line is a disciplined dressage curb bit developed for use alongside a bradoon and curb chain. Its anatomically shaped mouthpiece lies flat on the tongue and bars, while the Fine Line design provides enhanced tongue clearance and leverages poll and chin pressure for refined communication.

Description

In a dressage curb bit setup, the horse has two bits in the mouth: the curb bit and the bradoon. It is also always used with a curb chain.

The curb bit acts in three ways: Firstly, like any bit, it applies pressure to the mouth towards the rider's hand. Additionally, pressure is exerted on the chin and lower jaw between the bit and the chain. The leverage of the branches also strongly affects the poll.

Key factors for its effectiveness are the tongue clearance and the length of the branches. The Fine Line curb bit’s tongue clearance prevents the bit from pressing against the palate.

The mouthpiece of this curb bit follows the natural shape of the horse's mouth, lying flat on the tongue and bars. When the rider takes up the reins, the pressure is distributed evenly across the tongue and bars. As always with a curb bit, the rider’s hand is crucial. A curb bit can achieve a lot with a light aid, but both horse and rider must be able to handle it properly.

Advantages at a Glance:

Effectiveness:

  • Leverage effect on chin and poll
  • Even pressure distribution over bars and tongue

Size:

  • The curb bit should sit laterally at the corner of the mouth, with the bradoon chosen approximately 1 cm larger.

SWEET Copper Mouthpiece:

  • Better acceptance: The sweet-tasting copper is particularly well accepted by horses and promotes salivation.
  • 90% copper, 7% iron, and aluminum; nickel-free and exceptionally durable

Stainless Steel Mouthpiece:

  • Made of stainless steel
  • Stainless steel is durable, tasteless, and odorless

Suitable For:

  • The use of a curb bit should refine the communication between rider and horse. This is only possible if the communication with the bradoon already achieves a high level of sensitivity.
  • From a secure L-level

Note on Proper Use:

Every bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly, especially bits with leverage. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please feel free to contact us with questions about size and fitting, or read here  for more information on choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse’s mouth.

Sizes:

  • Width: 12.0 / 12.5 / 13.0 / 13.5 / 14.0 cm
  • Branch Length: 5 cm
  • Thickness: 12 mm
Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Width: 12.0 / 12.5 / 13.0 / 13.5 / 14.0 cm - Branch Length: 5 cm - Thickness: 12 mm

Composition

Mouthpiece: sweet copper - 90% copper, 7% zinc, 4% iron and aluminum hardened/stainless steel; Ring: stainless steel

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly; the wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
This Weymouth bit is designed for experienced dressage riders in a double bridle setup. Ensure the bradoon contact is highly refined before introducing this curb bit. Because of its leverage and mouthpiece design, smooth, balanced hand aids are essential. Proper fit and stable contact are crucial to avoid discomfort or miscommunication.
