The 1308 Fine Line Flex Swales Pelham is designed for stronger horses and combines advanced comfort technology with highly precise rein influence. The mouthpiece is made from flexible, food-grade PU (FDA-approved, plasticizer-free and completely safe), offering a warmer, more natural feel in the horse’s mouth. A concealed metal core ensures maximum break resistance and long-term safety. The straight, anatomically shaped mouthpiece lies evenly on tongue and bars, with slight tongue relief to reduce pressure. Unlike a traditional Pelham, the Swales version does not act on the poll — the large, free-moving bit ring allows more freedom while simultaneously providing a quicker, more direct response to the reins. The smaller bottom ring at the end of the shanks creates an upward-lifting action, similar to a Baucher, encouraging the horse to elevate rather than lean down. With two pairs of reins, the rider can regulate the level of influence precisely depending on which rein is used.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse. This bit is intended for educated, independent riders and horses that tend to lean heavily on the hand or pull downwards. It offers clear influence while maintaining softness thanks to the warm, flexible mouthpiece — ideal for sensitive or metal-intolerant horses. The Swales Pelham should only be used by experienced hands due to its direct and finely tuned effect.
