The 2281 Easy-Control 3-Ring Gag double broken transitions between a flexible snaffle and a bar-style bit depending on how much rein pressure is applied. Under light contact, it behaves like a normal double-jointed bit. When the horse exerts strong forward pressure on both reins, it “locks” into a bar effect to deliver firmer control.

Description

The Stübben SteelTEC Easy Control bits are activated by strong, bilateral pressure from the horse, turning them into a bar bit. With normal contact with the reins and as soon as the rider or the horse relaxes, the bit becomes flexible again and can be used like a regular snaffle bit. This allows for precise yet mouth-friendly aids when needed.

Thanks to the effect of the Easy Control bit, horses often learn to hold back on their own as soon as the bar effect kicks in. Therefore, Easy Control bits should be used for training purposes for short periods, with regular checks to see if the desired learning effect has been achieved.

The 2.5 Ring Swivel Easy Control offers various rein attachment options that allow for individual pressure distribution and different effects on the horse's poll and mouth. Compared to a standard 2.5 ring bit, this variant acts more directly due to the third branch where the mouthpiece is attached. The double-jointed mouthpiece distributes pressure evenly over the tongue and bars.

Advantages at a Glance

Rein Attachment Options and Effect
When the horse applies strong pressure forward on both reins, the bit acts like a bar. As soon as the horse or rider relaxes (on one side), the bit acts like a double-jointed snaffle.

Various rein attachment options allow for adjusting the pressure of the bit on the mouth and poll as needed:

  1. Option: Attaching the bridle to the upper small ring and the rein to the large ring - mild leverage effect on the poll.
  2. Option: Attaching the bridle to the upper small ring and the rein to the lower small ring - effect with mild leverage on the mouth and poll.
WARNING: Leverage bits should only be used by experienced riders.

Mouthpiece

  • Made of stainless steel
  • Stainless steel is robust, tasteless, and odorless

Which horses are particularly suited for this bit?

  • Horses that pull strongly towards jumps
  • Horses that resist by raising their heads

Note on Proper Use

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly and improperly, especially bits with leverage effects, so caution is advised. An incorrect size can also be painful for the horse. Please contact us if you have questions about size and fastening, or read more here  about choosing the right size and proper fitting in the horse’s mouth.

Please ensure that Easy Control bits are regularly switched out to check for the desired training effect.

Size Guide

Measure your horse’s mouth width by placing a bit sizer, string, or dowel between the corners of the lips (at the position where the bit will sit), mark the ends, then measure the distance.

The bit width should be such that the rings rest just outside (or very slightly beyond) the lip corners—if the bit is too narrow, it will pinch; too wide, it will shift side to side.

For loose ring bits, allow a little “play” so the rings can rotate freely without pinching the lips.

When mounted in the bridle, the bit should sit such that there is 1–2 small wrinkles at the corners of the mouth (but this is not a perfect rule for all jointed bits)

The bit should lie on the bars (the toothless gap between incisors and molars) and not press into teeth or interfere with the palate.

Care Instructions

Washing
After each ride, rinse or wipe the bit to remove saliva, feed residues, or sweat. Use lukewarm water and, if needed, a mild, pH-neutral detergent or saddle soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the metal surface and reduce the bit’s longevity.

Drying
Once cleaned, dry the bit thoroughly with a soft cloth. Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Do not expose the bit to direct sunlight, and never place it on or near heat sources such as heaters or radiators.

Storage
Store your bit in a dry, well-ventilated environment, protected from moisture and temperature fluctuations. For best results, keep bits individually or padded to prevent metal parts from rubbing or scratching each other. Avoid leaving the bit attached to the bridle for extended periods, especially in humid conditions.

Guidance

Any bit can cause pain if used roughly or improperly. The wrong size can also be painful for the horse.
Because the 3-Ring Easy Control can switch from a snaffle to a bar effect, it's especially important to use it judiciously. Under gentle rein contact, it offers soft, forgiving communication. When the horse pushes forward on both reins, it engages a firmer action (bar effect). Use only with skilled, soft hands — abrupt or heavy rein aids may provoke unwanted behavior. Change rein attachments periodically (upper vs lower rings) to vary effect and avoid desensitization.
